Working at First Steps

First Steps is an excellent place to work, with exceptional training opportunities and potential for advancement.

We are a family-owned business – our founders Debbi and Andy Gould are hands-on in all four nursery setings, offering leadership, support and guidance to all our staff.

We have our own on-site training facilities and links with training agency Aurelia Training. We also have strong links with local training colleges and schools.

We work in partnership with our staff. But don't take our word for it! This is what some of our staff say about us:

"I love working for First Steps. I have a passion for working with the under-5s…it's the starting blocks for a generation. First Steps shares that passion."

"We are a family and, as cheesy as that sounds, it's true!"

"Staff are encouraged to develop their individual skills, whether that's becoming a forest school leader, a PE instructor or starting an Early Years degree."

"As a new member of staff I have found it really helpful to receive feedback through the new staff monitoring log and regular supervisions…it's helped me to continue to improve."

"It's a friendly place which welcomes new staff, children and parents. Everyone treats the children as if they were their own. I love working here."

"Everyone is genuinely nice and helps you, it's a very supportive community."

"Working here has helped me grow in confidence."

"This was my first nursery job and I have been given the support of the wonderful and friendly staff and management in order to grow and develop, becoming a room leader."

"Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, supportive, welcoming…"

"I love that all staff are appreciated for their personal interests and strengths. Staff progression is really important to every

one and training is regularly updated."

"I am so proud to be part of a team that cares so much about each other and the children."

"My love of gardening was embraced by First Steps; I was given the opportunity to share this with the children by creating a wildlife garden and developing an allotment area. I have recently started an Early Years Foundation Degree and the team are very supportive."

"The nursery owners actually care and don't seem to treat it as a business, more as a family."

Training with First Steps

Our parents can be assured our staff are trained to the highest standard. We work in conjunction with a private training organisation, Aurelia Training Ltd, an Ofsted Grade 2 provider, and provide excellent on-site and classroom training for all our staff throughout their employment.

This begins with a rigorous induction programme which includes safeguarding, child protection and health & safety provision, and extends into full training programmes. We have our own purpose built training centre at our nursery in Northfield, which is ideally located for our own staff and employees from other local schools and nurseries.

We regularly invite other nurseries to join in with our training – we find this benefits all staff as they get to share experience and knowledge of a range of settings.

Deborah Wilson, Aurelia's Early Years Assessor, who works regularly with First Steps Children's Nurseries:

"First Steps recruit motivated, friendly and responsible people to their staff team who are willing to learn through apprenticeship placements and training courses. I have encountered engaging individuals who can work together as a team and reflect the professional nature of the organisation. The management team are approachable and flexible, enabling training to become part of the culture of the workplace."

Aurelia Training deliver a wide range of training courses for First Steps, including First Aid, Food Hygiene and Safeguarding up to the Level 3 Diploma in Children's Learning and Development, Team Leading and higher level Management qualifications.

These qualifications support our staff throughout their career at First Steps, from starting as an Apprentice to Room Leader and Management positions.

Please visit Aurelia Training website to find out more about the qualifications they deliver.
